FLASH Rocketry is an official organization that unites rocketry enthusiasts by facilitating exchange of ideas, project planning, model building and flying. In addition, FLASH Rocketry plans to provide commercial liability insurance to landowners, a model that has been very successful in attracting members and allowing retention of large flying fields (ex. METRA, MDRA). A longer term goal is to lease and/or purchase a plot of unobstructed land so that FLASH Rocketry can have unhindered access to its own launch field, away from urban areas.
In order to accomplish these objectives, FLASH Rocketry has set up an organizational structure that relies upon its constituency to support the organization's goal and strengthen the image of model rocketry within the community. Most rocketry clubs have lasted few years or failed to accomplish long-term objectives due to the heavy investment they placed on voluntarism and unreliable and dwindling membership fees. In addition, the recent downturn of the economy has profoundly changed the hobby, by reducing the number of people who have enough disposable income and by drastically reducing the number of flying fields available due to their changing ownership or type of cultivation. And finally liability is a growing concern among hobby practitioner, since any incident or perceived threat has the potential to trigger legal action.
The climate is ripe for a change in direction and to transform a purely voluntary and unstructured hobby into an adult activity that has a component of leisure as well as professionalism, with its heavy reliance on engineering, mechanics, aerodynamics, physics, mathematics and material science. Although a professional background in those fields is not a requisite for practicing rocketry, there is a need for the serious hobbyist to study and become familiar with multiple aspects of science to have not only a successful building experience but also a safe flight and an undamaged recovery.
